Burlesque

Burlesque or neo-burlesque is the revival and updating of the traditional burlesque performance.

Burlesque was a form of variety entertainment including skits and dance numbers, often satirical and heckling the upper class, which became popular in the second half of the 1800s. One of the characteristic ingredients were daring outfit with a focus on the female body and jokes with sexual innuendo.

Though based on the traditional burlesque act, the new form encompasses a wider range of performance styles: Neo-burlesque acts can be anything from classic striptease to modern dance to theatrical minidramas to comedic mayhem. As with the earlier burlesque, neo-burlesque is more focused on the "tease" in striptease than the "strip". Audience for neo-burlesque shows tend to be mixed gender, age, race and class.
